How to Tell that Your Puppy Loves You

Have you ever wondered whether your puppy loves you? For humans, it’s easy to show our affection through various ways. Whether it’s kisses, yummy treats, or finding the best vet, we always go out of our way to make sure our fur-babies have a healthy and happy life. But what about our puppies? Do they love us like we love them?

Here’s the thing: Yes, our puppies do love us—unconditionally, in fact. They just express their love much more differently than we do. Here are a few ways your puppy shows their love.

1. It’s all in the eyes

Direct eye contact with a puppy can be interpreted as a challenge, but if your fur-baby has bonded with you, it takes on a completely different meaning. When puppies look at you, their brains release a hormone called oxytocin (known as the “love hormone”). If you see your puppy look into your eyes, they’re letting you know how important you are to them.

2. When in doubt, check the ears and eyebrows

A dog always uses their body to express a range of emotions. Barking, growling, tail wagging—your pup’s physical movements will say a lot about how they are feeling. Facial expressions can also help us determine what’s on their mind. One way your pup may show affection is by raising their eyebrows (mostly their left one) and shifting their left ear back when they see you. This means that they love and trust you.

3. Never a dull moment when you come home

Does your puppy jump at you, bring you their favorite toy, and wag their tail like there’s no tomorrow when you come from work or other errands? That is true love in its purest form. Your fur-baby is absolutely thrilled to see you, and wants you to know in every way they can. It’s definitely a sign they love you and happy you’ve returned home safe and sound.

4. Your pup craves physical contact

Although you may have heard that certain types of physical contact makes a puppy uncomfortable, the opposite is true. Puppies love physical affection, and if they want it, they will seek it out from their favorite people. They may lean against you while you’re sitting on the couch or on the floor. It’s a way of showing they feel safe and secure around you.

5. There’s always a smile on your pup’s face

Yes, you read it right! Some puppies learn to “smile” by pulling back their teeth and showing off their pearly whites. Sometimes, they may greet with an open mouth and a relaxed expression. This is a sign that your fur-baby is happy to see you. By returning their smile and talking in a happy voice, you let them know you love them too!

6. “Check-ins” happen when you’re out of sight

Many puppies may follow their owners around the house. As your furry friend grows older, they may grow more independent and not stick around you for very long. This, however, does not mean they don’t love you. If you’re in another room or area of your house, and your puppy occasionally “checks in” on you, they are making sure you are safe and nearby.

A puppy’s love isn’t something you can force or command–it’s earned through trust, patience and understanding. There are a number of ways to scientifically test whether your puppy loves you or not, but if your fur-baby wags their tail, jump, and perk their left eyebrows at the sight of you, you can be assured that there’s a lot of love for you in their heart.
