Even though a Thanksgiving dish might taste good to a dog, doesn’t mean the dog should eat it. Sadly, many dog owners don’t see the harm in feeding their furry friends table scraps. But doing this is actually very bad for the dog’s health. Some “seemingly fine” human foods cause long-term health problems when dogs eat them. You should never feed your dog fatty or greasy human food, for example. 

Around the Thanksgiving dinner table, a dog should never be given:

• Turkey bones, skin, and gravy
• Stuffing
• Casseroles
• Mashed potatoes
• Creamed peas
• Chocolate, cookies, pies, and sweets (especially anything containing xylitol)
• Alcoholic beverages
• Raisins and grapes
• Onions, scallions, and garlic
• Ham
• Yeast dough
• Fatty foods
• Foods containing spices

However, you can feed your puppy or adult dog the following foods:

• Sweet potatoes 
• Potatoes
• Apples
• Turkey meat (no bones, skins, etc.)
• Green beans
• Plain peas
• Pumpkin

If any of the above mentioned “safe” foods are sugared, spiced, or mixed with other ingredients, then you cannot feed it to your puppy!

Cranberry Apple Sauce Frozen Treats

Just because it’s sweater weather, doesn’t mean your puppy minds a good chill! Dogs love frozen treats. Frozen dog treats are easy to make. But you’ll have to plan for the length of time it will take them to freeze. Our favorite frozen dog treat for Thanksgiving is Cranberry Apple Sauce Frozen Treats. This dog treat is easy to make. 

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup of cranberries
• 1/2 cup of chopped red apple
• 1/2 cup water
• Sprig of fresh rosemary

Instructions:

1. Boil cranberries, chopped apple, and rosemary sprig in water until the fruit is soft.
2. Fish out the rosemary sprig and discard.
3. Use a potato masher to turn the fruits into a paste.
4. Spoon or pipe your cran-apple sauce into molds and freeze!

Turkey Meat and Sweet Potato Treat

This delicious dog treat idea has more to do with Thanksgiving leftovers than the actual family festivities, but we still love it! So long as you have leftover turkey and sweet potatoes, you can whip up this yummy and healthy puppy treat. The one caveat is that these ingredients must be “clean.” Meaning, no gravy on the turkey, and no sugar, cinnamon, butter, or oils on the sweet potatoes. 

Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup plain mashed and cooked sweet potatoes
• 3/4 cup water
• 1 egg, lightly beaten
• 2 cups cooked white turkey meat, finely chopped
• 2 cups whole wheat flour or white whole wheat flour

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
2. In a medium bowl, combine sweet potatoes, water, and egg, stirring until thoroughly incorporated. Add turkey and flour (gradually) and stir until combined. The batter will be very thick and sticky.
3. Use a rubber spatula to spread the dough evenly onto a parchment-lined baking sheet to form a rectangle (approximately 10″ x 14″) at about 1/2″ thickness.
4. Use a knife or pizza cutter to score the dough into rectangles of whatever size you’d like.
5. Bake for about 30 minutes, until the treats are a light golden brown.
6. Cool completely and then break along the score lines or use a knife/pizza cutter to cut along the score lines.
7. Store in the refrigerator or in zippered freezer bags in the freezer (thaw before serving).
