4 Signs You Might Be Stressing Out Your Puppy

Have you noticed your puppy acting unusual lately? Are they sleepier than they usually are? Do they show signs of tension, clinginess, or depression? If so, your puppy may be showing signs of stress.

Like all puppy parents, fur-babies can feel a range of emotions, including stress and anxiety. Without meaning to, humans can be the direct cause of their furry friend’s stress, which can have negative effects on your puppy’s health. Here are a few signs you might be stressing out your puppy.

• Increased sleepiness. Your fur-baby is a fluffy ball of energy. And if you’ve gotten to know your furry friend long enough, you’re well familiar with their sleeping schedule. If you notice your puppy is more tired than usual, it is most certainly a sign that they’re sick, injured, or traumatized. It could also indicate signs of poisoning, diarrhea, and other health conditions. Speak to your pet’s veterinarian to find the root of your pup’s lethargy.

• Changes in eating. If your puppy loses interest in food or treats, then it is a telltale sign that something is wrong. It can indicate stress and/or other health conditions in your pup. It’s especially important to detect a decrease in eating because it can cause drastic weight loss and negative health impacts. Consult with your veterinarian before attempting anything yourself.

• Problems with digestion. Stress affects not just the heart, but the digestive systems in both humans and puppies. A stressed puppy may have diarrhea, constipation and other digestive issues. It can also be signs of other conditions, like food intolerance. Let your puppy’s vet know of your fur-baby’s digestive issues, especially if you notice any abnormalities in the stool.

• Aggression towards others. Some aggressive signs in a puppy include growling, angry body posture, and an open grin. If your normally happy and friendly puppy is suddenly showing aggression towards you and other people or animals, they may be stressed out. It may be tempting to muzzle your pup but you should consult your vet for the best possible methods.

If stress and anxiety is the cause of your pup’s recent behavior, you can try to alleviate their stress by regularly playing and exercising with your furry companion or distracting them with puzzle toys. You can also create a safe zone for your fur-baby in your home whenever a high-stress event occurs.

By identifying the common signs of stress your puppy may exhibit and consulting your veterinarian, you can become one step closer in helping your fur-baby become the happy and friendly friend they once were.
