5 Best Homemade Dog Biscuits For Your Puppy

January 14, 2019

It’s International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day! And what better way to celebrate than by baking your adorable puppy a yummy little treat? Homemade treats offer countless benefits, but most especially it gives you control over what goes into the recipe. You can make your pup’s homemade treat as healthy as you want, which helps you avoid any potential allergens and unhealthy additives.

With so many delicious DIY options, here are 5 healthy homemade dog biscuits you can make just for your puppy:

1.Basic Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups of whole wheat flour (substitute regular flour or oats if your pup is sensitive to wheat)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of beef or chicken Bouillon granules (you can also use beef or chicken broth/stock)
  • ½ cup of hot water
  • Optional: Add bacon or chicken broth, eggs, oats, liver powder, wheat germ, shredded cheese, bacon bits

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Dissolve bouillon in hot water
  3. Add remaining ingredients
  4. Knead dough until it forms a ball (approximately 3 minutes)
  5. Roll dough until ½ inch thick
  6. Cut into slices or bone shapes (use a bone shaped cookie cutter to make shapes with)
  7. Place dough pieces on lightly greased cookie sheet
  8. Cook for 30 minute

2. Spinach, Carrot, and Zucchini Dog Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 cup of peanut butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup of old fashioned oats
  • 3 cups of whole wheat flour (or as needed)
  • 1 carrot (peeled and shredded)
  • 1 zucchini (shredded)
  • 1 cup baby spinach (chopped)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Gradually add old fashioned oats and 2 ½ cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup flour at a time just until the dough is no longer sticky. Add carrot, zucchini and spinach, beating just until incorporated.
  4. Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.
  6. Let cool completely.

3. Pumpkin Apple Dog Treats

Ingredients:

  • 4 – 4.5 cups of oatmeal
  • 1 medium apple
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of canned pumpkin

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Grind the oatmeal down in a food processor or blender. Transfer to mixing bowl.
  3. Core apple, being sure to remove all of the seeds. Grate apple, and add to bowl with oatmeal.
  4. Add egg and canned pumpkin to bowl and mix well to combine. The mixture will be thick and slightly sticky.
  5. On a surface dusted with oatmeal (ground or not, your choice) roll the dough out to approximately ½” thick. Use a doggy bone cookie cutter to cut dough into shapes, and transfer to a lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake for approximately 12-15 minutes, or until golden and crispy. Allow to cool to room temperature, then store in an airtight container for up to a week.

4. Homemade Fresh Breath Treats

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of fresh mint packed
  • ½ cup of fresh organic parsley
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon of activated charcoal or 12 capsules cut open
  • 1 tablespoon of diatomaceous earth
  • 2 tablespoons of Brewers Yeast
  • ½ teaspoon of grass fed gelatin
  • 3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of Ghee melted
  • ½ cup of bone broth or filtered water (warmed)
  • 1 tablespoon of liquid chlorophyll or freshly juiced wheatgrass

Instructions:

  1. In your food processor, combine mint, parsley, charcoal, diatomaceous earth, brewers yeast, gelatin and egg. Process until smooth.
  2. Add melted coconut oil, ghee, bone broth and chlorophyll, process until well combined.
  3. Add garbanzo bean flour ½ cup at a time, pulsing to combine until the mixture resembles a dough or will press together into your hand making a dough – similar to play dough. It should not be dry, add a few drops of water if it’s too dry or additional flour if too wet until it will hold together.
  4. Roll out on parchment paper to roughly 1/4 inch thick and cut into desired shapes.
  5. Bake at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
  6. Transfer to a cooling rack to cool before storing in an airtight container.

5. Chicken and Wild Rice Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 6 ounces of boneless chicken breast (boiled or grilled)
  • ½ cup of cooked wild rice (cooled)
  • ½ cup of chicken stock
  • 2 ½ cup of All Purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 egg

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Combine chicken, rice and chicken stock in a mini food processor or blender and pulse until a paste forms.
  3. Add the flour, salt, egg and chicken paste into a bowl and mix well.
  4. Sprinkle a little flour on a flat surface and knead dough until it’s no longer sticky; then roll it out with a rolling pin about ½-inch thick.
  5. Cut out shapes and place them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Mine yielded 32 biscuits using a 3.5″ cookie cutter.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes until light brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely before serving.

We hope your fur-baby enjoys their yummy treats in time for International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. Make sure to give them many praises while they munch away too!
