History

The Labrador Retriever breed got its start in Newfoundland, where it was bred as a waterdog. Some of the duties’ that Labs had were to catch ducks and assist fishermen with daily chores. Many Labrador Retrievers were adopted by visiting English nobles, who later introduced the breed in England and called them “Labrador dogs.”

Size

Male Labrador Retrievers can grow between 22.5 to 24.5 inches tall and weigh 65 to 80 pounds. Female Labradors reach 21.5 to 23.5 inches and weigh between 55 to 70 pounds. 

Temperament

Avoid giving your Labrador frequent baths as this can strip their fur of its natural oils and nutrients. Make sure to trim your Lab’s nails and brush their teeth at least twice a week. You should also brush your Labrador’s fur every week to get rid of loose hairs. It’s important to regularly brush your Lab’s coat as this can prevent the buildup of hair in your home, especially during specific seasons. 

Exercise Level

Labradors are an energetic breed, a trait they likely inherited from their waterdog ancestors. As such, Labs need lots of exercise and activity every day of the week. Without sufficient exercise, Labs can become hyperactive, whiny, and even destructive, especially towards your furniture. Training

Because of their high energy and friendly demeanor, training is a must-have for Labrador Retrievers. You must train and socialize your Lab puppy as soon as you bring them home. Expose them to different people, environments, and situations to help them grow accustomed to different experiences. This will help them express their energy and outgoing personality traits in an appropriate way. Your Labrador’s training should focus on positive reinforcement. Make sure they receive lots of praises and treats when they perform a command. Avoid scolding as this can discourage your Labrador from following your training.
