Most dogs communicate through barking to alert their owners of strangers or to be let outside. However, there are some dogs that just love to use their voiceβsometimes all hours of the day! If a dog that barks a lot doesnβt bother you, your neighbors may not feel the same way. The sound of a barking dog in the mornings or at night isnβt something that everyone is jazzed about. To prevent problems and make peace with your neighbors, you may want to bring a quiet dog breed into your life. Whether theyβre small or large, there are countless dog breeds that rarely ever bark.
Here are 5 dog breeds that appreciate silence over all the noise.
French Bulldog

French Bulldogs are irresistible. Itβs hard not to fall for a Frenchieβs wrinkly, puffy cheeks and button nose. Apart from their small size and good looks, Frenchies are dogs that donβt really have a lot to say. They may bark when they see an unfamiliar guest but theyβd much rather spend their time taking naps. Their favorite pastime is spending the day with their owners on the couch.
Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dogs are huge but donβt let their big size intimidate you. This breed is very calm and peaceful. As such, they donβt bark very often and their quiet nature is appreciated by most dog owners. Be aware: Bernese Mountain Dogs are highly active so while they may not say much, they do enjoy a good adventure with their loved ones.
Australian Shepherd

Lively and intelligent, Australian Shepherds are known for enjoying a fast-paced life. These dogs love activities that involve using their stamina for long periods of time. Aussies are also pretty quiet dogs. Theyβll alert their owners of any stranger or unfamiliar situation but itβs unlikely youβll ever hear them yapping up a storm. Overall, Australian Shepherds are self-controlled dogs. They prefer thinking before doing and possess a quiet personality.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels is another small dog that likes to keep quiet. Rather than barking and yapping, Cavaliers prefer showing off their obedient nature. Their lack of barking helps them look wise and controlled to many dog owners. This breed also has large brown eyes, long fluffy ears, and a delicate face that many dog lovers fall in love with. Cavaliers despise loneliness, and would rather spend their time with their loved ones at all times.
Shiba Inu

Shiba Inus were originally bred as hunting dogs in Japan. Nowadays, theyβre beloved as dogs that highly intelligent, independent, and calm. Shiba Inus are fiercely loyal to their owners. They also enjoy their independence, often doing things their own way. Because of this, itβs unlikely youβll ever see a Shiba Inu barking at you for attentionβ¦or for anything at all! Of course, they may have a lot to say if you decide to play with them or if they become upset.
All dogs are great dogs, but they all have different traits that make them special. If you live in an apartment or a small space, having a quiet dog can help you be a good neighbor. We know that having a dog with a vocal personality may seem like a fun and sweet idea, but it can present problems in the future, even if you live in a regular neighborhood. Most dogs do bark if thereβs something bothering them so make sure your dog isnβt in pain or if thereβs another cause to their barks.
There are numerous other dog breeds that donβt bark a lot. At Petland, we may the quiet four-legged buddy youβre looking for. Be sure to check out our Available Puppies or visit our store to learn more about what breeds we have available!
