Cavapoo: A Puppy You’ll Forever Love

August 30, 2022

The Cavapoo is an adorable, fluffy dog that’s a mix of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle breeds. Apart from their cute appearance, Cavapoo puppies inherit the best traits from each of their parents, especially when it comes to their temperament. For example, Cavapoos have outgoing, playful, and friendly personalities, making them the perfect family dog.

Cavapoos belong to the designer dog breed group, which means they haven’t been around for very long. Because they’re a relatively new dog breed, Cavapoos go by different names, including Cavadoodle and Cavoodle. We’ll go by Cavapoo to avoid confusion.

Intelligent, attentive, and people-oriented, Cavapoos enjoy having the love and affection of their puppy parents. However, are these adorable pups the right ones for you? If you want a loyal, sociable dog that always wants to spend time with you, the Cavapoo dog might just be your new furry best friend!

Breed History

A cute Cavapoo puppy looks at the camera while sitting in a living room.

Cavapoos are designer dogs. Designer dogs are a dog breed popularized during the 1980s and 1990s. During this era, breeders would breed two purebred dogs to create new hybrid puppies.

In the Cavapoos case, designer breeders in Australia began breeding the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the Poodle during the late 1990s. Their hope was to create a wonderful furry companion that would inherit the intelligence of the Poodle breed with the outgoing yet calm personality of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

These breeders also wanted a hybrid dog that people with allergies could keep in their homes. Poodles are a hypoallergenic dog breed. This means their offspring will shed less hair than other breeds. Today, Cavapoos are beloved all over the world for their beautiful fur, cute teddy bear appearance, and friendly personality.

Size

An adorable Cavapoo puppy sits in the middle of a grassy field.

Because of their designer breed status, Cavapoos vary when it comes to sizes. Most Cavapoos range between small and medium sizes, but it all depends on the size of their Poodle parent. This can range between 9 to 14 inches at the shoulder. Many Cavapoos weigh between 9 to 25 pounds, though they can weigh less or more.

Temperament

A fluffy Cavapoo dog sits on a wooden floor while looking at the camera.

Cavapoos are very popular dogs among dog owners. And it’s not hard to see why. These beautiful, playful pups have such an amicable and social personality. They love playing with their family members, whether it’s a game of fetch or even training.

Cavapoos are known for being super affectionate with their loved ones. If you allow a Cavapoo into your heart and home, expect lots of cuddles and snuggles on the couch!

Of course, because Cavapoos have so much love for their family, they cannot stand being alone for long periods of time. These dogs often experience intense separation anxiety, especially if they’re not socialized and trained as puppies.

Without proper socialization, Cavapoos can turn to destructive, problematic behaviors such as chewing on furniture or eating from garbage when left alone.

It’s highly important to keep your Cavapoo dog company while at home, and to make special arrangements before leaving them alone. Remember that Cavapoos live for your love and praise. They would do absolutely anything for you, which makes them very easy to train. Cavapoos also excel in agility and obedience contests since they also have an athletic nature.

Cavapoos are friendly so you don’t need to worry about bringing guests to your home. Of course, these dogs might be…too friendly. If you’re searching for a guard dog, a Cavapoo will likely greet intruders with a friendly grin and a wagging tail. In other words, these furry friends aren’t the best choice.

Exercise Level

A cute Cavapoo puppy runs and cahses a toy on a grassy field.

While the Cavapoo is an athletic and outgoing dog, they do not need high amounts of exercise like Sporting breeds do. For the Cavapoo, just a few minutes of playtime with their family members is enough for them.

As with most dogs, however, it’s important to ensure your Cavapoo puppy goes on short walks on a regular basis. You should also make sure that you have a leash on your puppy at all times. We recommend taking your Cavapoo on a short hike, which allows them to explore different sights and scents. It also gives them a chance to bond with you!

Grooming

A fluffy, adorable Cavapoo puppy sits on a comfy chair.

Most Cavapoo coats are a mix of their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle parents. This often means their fur comes in a variety of colors, such as chocolate, gold, and white.

Many Cavapoos have chestnut or white colored fur. Some are even tri-colored. They usually have soft, wavy or curly coats due to their Poodle parents. Make no mistake—Cavapoos are hypoallergenic as well! So no matter how fluffy or wavy your Cavapoo’s coat gets, it will not shed very often.

Still, it’s important to regularly groom your dog’s hair to keep in a healthy condition. Fortunately, your Cavapoo’s curly coat is cozy enough to help them tolerate cold and warm weathers (just don’t leave them outside during extreme weather, obviously!).

Training

A cute Cavapoo puppy sits in a grassy field and looks off to the distance.

The Cavapoo is a very intelligent puppy that’s highly trainable. You can thank their Poodle parent for their intelligence and trainability. However, they also get their sensitive side from their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent. As such, we highly recommended using positive reinforcement during training.

Positive reinforcement involves making training fun and pleasant for your puppy. This means you should avoid using aggression or fear to force them into performing tricks.

Instead, you should use treats and/or their favorite toys during training. Any items that your Cavapoo loves can act as a reward when your pup follows a command or trick. Also, be sure to socialize your Cavapoo at an early age.

Although Cavapoos are social and friendly, it’s important to push your dog into a new environment or experience other people and dogs. That way they can use unfamiliar objects like the vacuum cleaner or meet strangers without becoming scared.

You do not need to spend hours training; just a few short sessions can be enough for your Cavapoo. Remember that the Cavapoo is not a working dog. As such, they do not need as much mental stimulation as their Poodle parent. Still, you can enter your Cavapoo in obedience and agility contests which can show off their intelligence and athleticism.

If you are searching for a wonderful, loyal furry companion with a big heart, look no further than the Cavapoo. Cavapoos were made to steal hearts with their friendly nature and high intelligence.

Their trainability and companionship will certainly keep you on your feet at all times. Make sure you are able to open your heart and home to a Cavapoo. We know that this laidback and gentle pup will always be with you to make your day, no matter what!
